[pullquote]More great examples of color blocking can be found on Essence.com and Glamour.com Unsure of which color combinations would work best together? Check out this great post on how to combine colors in your wardrobe by Danielle Gray of The Style and Beauty Doctor.[/pullquote]Much like ponchos, color blocking was actually pretty big at the beginning of the 2000s and has now made its way back to the forefront of fashion. (Just goes to show that while you shouldn't go overboard when it comes to trends, you don't have to completely get rid of things after the trend blows over . . . I have a few colorblocked dresses that I bought in 2003 that work perfectly right now.)
While color blocking can be accomplished by wearing two separate, solid items like Wendy Williams does here, I actually tend to lean more towards the single piece (usually a dress or skirt) that uses geometric shapes to achieve the color blocked look.
Check out a few pieces I particularly like....

What are your thoughts? Will you be color blocking this spring?

[caption id="attachment_2824" align="alignleft" width="420" caption="Adele at the 2012 Brit Awards (source: celebrity-gossip.net)"][/caption]I know I'm not supposed to say this. But, as a plus-size fashion maven, I feel I must.
Adele, sweetie, we love you. We really do. We adore your music and could not be more proud of your success. But, um, I feel that it's important to tell you . . . you are NOT going to a funeral! You don't *have* to wear black to every formal affair.
As you take time off to focus on your personal life, I hope that it inspires you to explore the world of color.
Now that that is out of the way, I feel the need to atone for calling out one of our plus-size she-roes. So, let's talk about the fact that Adele is on the March 2012 cover of Vogue. Wearing black. (Sorry, I had to point this out.) Anyways, this is a major accomplishment since we all know that Anna Wintour does not care about fat people. But as we know, dollar signs are enough to make just about anybody change their mind (or at least hold their nose for a while).
I am a huge believer in speaking with my dollars, so I happily picked up the March 2012 issue of Vogue. I strongly suggest you do the same! In the meantime, here is a behind-the-scenes look at the cover shoot and interview with the cover model herself. The gal has got guts and I love her for it!

"Be happy in your own skin. If you are unhealthy start by making small changes to become healthier. You are unique, beautiful, and worthy. Last but certainly not least, don't buy into any of it. AND I MEAN LITERALLY! I don't buy magazines that don't feature women who represent my physicality or varying ethnicities on their cover because they are saying, YOU DON'T MATTER TO ME...YOU ARE NOT MY DEMOGRAPHIC. To that I say, good, that's $35 a week I can save!"

[pullquote]Check out Afrobella.com's exclusive interview with Octavia's makeup artist who reveals her red carpet beauty secrets![/pullquote]In honor of this Sunday night's Academy Awards, I want to recognize Octavia Spencer who has absolutely dazzled on the red carpet this awards season. Through both her head-turning ensembles and setting the record straight via Facebook, she has made it clear that curves absolutely have a place in the spotlight. In anticipation of Sunday's Academy Awards, for which she is nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, here are some of my favorite looks from Octavia:

Best wishes to Octavia (and Viola Davis, too!) on Sunday.
Lately I find myself having to attend a lot of evening functions that require an almost completely different *look* than my day job. In an attempt to simplify things, I've been turning to dresses as a basic element to swap my look from day to evening. (Click on the pic to get a better look!)
Carry your dress shoes and clutch in your daytime tote, leave the blazer and flats in your office, swap the scarf for a necklace and you've got a whole new look! What do you think?
Oh dear ladies - I was devastated yesterday when I learned that BeautyFull Boutique, a darling plus-size consignment shop in Alexandria, Virginia will be closing its doors at the end of this month. It is one of the key places I go when looking for reasonably-priced, plus-size professional apparel. It is THE curvy girl hub in the DC metropolitan area - hosting workshops, classes and standout events like Fashion Night Out PLUS and Evolution of Curves last Fall. More importantly, shop owner Camille was one of my first big supporters when I began my blogging venture. (You can read my interview with Camille over at Capital Style.)
So, yeah, I am pretty sad.
But, there is good news! First, even though the physical store is closing, BeautyFull Boutique will continue to live on through the internets! Basically, it will be an online consignment shop - how cool is that? Details about how all of this will work are still unfolding, but I will definitely keep y'all posted. It's good in a way because it widens the customer base for the store - so you can be in Alexandria, Virginia or Alexandria, Tennessee and still take advantage of the stylish inventory! In fact, to celebrate the online launch, BeautyFull Boutique will be offering free shipping and delivery through March 30. Also, it looks like BeautyFull Boutique will offer a mobile "pop-up" shop from time to time so that we DC-area girls can still get that in-person shopping experience.
Check out the frequently asked questions for more information about the transition. But definitely be sure to stop by between now and Sunday, February 26 for their "Farewell to Fayette" clearance sale.
by Curvy CEO • • Comments Off on Trend Alert – FUSCHIA!
In contrast to yesterday's acknowledgment of orange/tangerine, I am absolutely THRILLED to focus on another big color trend for Spring 2012 - FUSCHIA! That sun-scortched version of pink . . . just before it turns purple . . . fushcia is quite possibly the greatest color of them all. If you couldn't already tell from the logo of this blog, I am absolutely enamored with this color.
It's an incredibly bold hue so if you opt to wear it, do so thoughtfully. You will definitely grab attention, so be sure that whatever fuschia item you choose - whether it be an accessory or a shade of lipstick - be sure it really works with your entire ensemble. A few options for your consideration . . . .
I tried my best to ignore it.
But, the fashion gods have spoken.
Or, if you want to get fancy with it, tangerine.
Either way, I *hate* this color.
To me, it's like the ugly kid sister to red and pink.
It makes me think of fruit - pumpkins and, well, oranges and tangerines.
But, if you decide that you want to take advantage of this trend (which hopefully will untrend very soon!), here are some nice options for you....
Well, there you have it. I feel like I've done my duty as a fashion blogger. I have no plans to incorporate orange/tangerine into my spring ensembles . . . I just can't do it. What about you? Will you be embracing this shade?
