Recently on the metro, I saw a 50-something year old woman rocking some black and white ombre nails. And not some subtle-gradual-transition-from-black-to-white ombre nails. I’m talking super-complicated-bold-design-black-and-white ombre nails. Like, the kind I would expect one of the younger Kardashians to wear. The rest of her was pretty casual – slinky pants and a cardigan, bob haircut. She had her work ID dangling from her neck. Altogether it seemed an odd combination.
That got me wondering . . . how old is too old for trends? Is there such a thing as being too old for trends? Sound off!
P.S. – Lest you think I’m being discriminatory, I also invite you to comment on the question of what age is too young for trends. Case in point . . .

In general I think that people should wear whatever makes them happy but there’s a point where we start to look ridiculous, especially if we expect to work in an office. (I fully intend to have long curls to my butt again by the time that they’re all gray but I’m not going on any interviews.) Maybe it’s just me but it seems in poor taste to me to try to come across as 25 years younger than we are and a bit pathetic if taken too far. People point and laugh.
There’s also a cost issue because trends don’t last and unless you want to save them for 20 years until the trend comes around again they’re dated by the next season. If you need to dress up or wear suits for work clothing is too expensive to toss after a year. I tend to avoid trends in what I make because I want people to be able to wear them for years and years. I’m sure that I lose some business from younger women because of it but we old farts have to shop somewhere.
Small touches like nails is not so bad. Even a close crop cut that’s not a crazy color okay… But anything else, like clothes with juicy on them, tattoos, etc. NO!
Honestly I think we get too caught up in age and what is age appropriate. I’m thinking back to a few weeks ago when people made a stink about Madonna showing her boob and that she was too old for such shenanigans. If she was twenty years younger it still would have been inappropriate to show her boob to an audience (age shouldn’t be a factor) but it is Madonna.
Anyway, as for fashion trends I don’t think we can put an age on them. If a woman can rock them and feel good doing it then she should. A hot trend can look wrong on a young person who doesn’t wear it well but look awesome on a woman twenty years older who knows how to rock it. In this day and age we have to work more towards not limiting people because of their age. We’re all going to be there and we all don’t need to all be wearing polyester pants and applique sweaters with cats on them.
