Layer This!

One issue that never fails to stump office fashionistas – whether plus-size or otherwise – is how to handle the dueling temperatures during the summer. While the outdoors might feel like a furnace (as it did much of last week!), the inside of your office probably feels like a trip to the Arctic.

How to handle this dilemma? You basically have two options:

Options 1. Keep reserves on hand! I always keep two things in my office – a pashmina scarf that I can wrap around myself at any time and a gray blazer. (The blazer actually serves two purposes. Not only will it keep me warm if need be, but it also “dresses up” a more casual look a big-wig happens to stop by the office unexpectedly. Because most of my wardrobe is based in black – as opposed to brown or blue – it almost always works with what I’m wearing.)

Option 2. Wear layers! This option, which comes highly recommended from the fabulous Corporate Fashionista, requires a little bit more planning on your part. Whether you settle on a blazer or a cardigan (traditional or wrap), wearing layers requires you to put together two looks in one…because at some point, even if only when schlepping from your car to your desk, folks are going to see what you are wearing underneath. No beat-up, pit-stained camis for you, Miss Missy! Whatever you’re wearing underneath must look good enough to stand on its own as if it there were no blazer or sweater to hide underneath once you’re in the office. Otherwise, you’re doing yourself a great disservice. Inevitably, the day that you head out to grab some lunch wearing only your throw-away tank and slacks, you will run into an old boyfriend or potential employer. Seriously. Never fails.
