Given the recent record-breaking temperatures and yesterday’s post about the need to be okay taking off your blazer or sweater, I felt it was important to make the following Plus-Size Public Service Announcement:
YOU CAN GO SLEEVELESS!
I don’t care what your mama, daddy, cousin, friend, foe or any fashion magazine told you. In the United States you have the RIGHT to bare arms! (Get it? Huh? Get it? [/nerd])
I know this is hard to believe, but no one thinks you have skinny arms up underneath those jackets, sweaters, long sleeved shirts, etc. (I know. It shocked me to realize this, too.) Furthermore, by covering up your arms, you may actually make yourself look even bigger. (On how many episodes of Say Yes to the Dress: Big Bliss have we seen this be the case?) Shoot, you may be drawing even more attention to the areas you’re trying to hide by virtue of the fact that you’re covered in fabric from head to toe despite the extreme temperatures.
So, why torture yourself in the heat by refusing to show your arms? I know that it can take a while to get used to the idea . . . so you may want to ease into it . . . maybe start with short sleeves . . . then work your way up to a cap sleeves. Before you know it, you’ll be flaunting those beautiful arms with the best of them!
My only caveat to exercising this right is to be mindful of your environment. While sleeveless is okay for business casual, it’s generally not okay for executive or business formal settings.
So, how ’bout it ladies? Are ready to show your bare arms? Do you already do so? Let’s discuss!

Between weight loss and late middle age my upper arms are so hideous that I may never show them again. I think that I could hide a volkswagen in there without them showing.
I have absolutely have no problem baring my arms when it is hot. Fat arms look like fat arms whether they are bare or covered up, as you said. I am more self conscious about being so white than my bare arms but that still doesn’t stop me in the hot and humid weather.
I’m so glad I got over my arm phobia years ago. It helps they are more toned than they used to be. But don’t get it twisted I am far from Mrs. Obaman’s arms.
I do disagree in that I do not think it is appropriate to go sleveless in the office. You should at least do a light weight summer sweater over sleveless or a cap sleeve while at work. But then I tend to be on the conservative side when it comes to work wardrobe.
Great Read!!!
Thanks for all the comments, ladies. I plan to do a series on office attire soon.
Hi. I just found this blog. I sometimes wish I could cover my arms more but I don’t, because I live on a tropical country and I would stand out so much wearing long sleeves, jackets or sweaters. It’s hot here all the time, the lowest the temperature gets is about 70 degrees F.
Hi Lorraine – Thanks for stopping by! In a warmer climate, I’m guessing most people show their arms all the time…regardless of size. That’s how I felt when I was on vacation in Hawaii and Puerto Rico. I was like, “Well, if these sistas don’t care, why should I?” Hope you will keep reading!
