Monday Morning Memo – Do You Have the Courage to Be Who You Really Are?

monday morning memo"It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are." - e.e. cummings This past week I have been challenged by those closest to me to take a hard look at some of My Truths - the way I think about the world and my place in it. This has not been a fun, easy, or pleasant process. There have been harsh words, deep breaths, fitful bouts of sleep, and bitter tears. Not to mention the chocolate, cupcakes, and wine. And yes, there have been breakthroughs. Even though I have not enjoyed this process . . . at all . . . my girls set me straight when I questioned whether it was even necessary. (Heh. It was a real smack in the face to hear the truth - that you don't become a size 22 shopaholic simply because you like to eat food and dress nice.) After a week of intense conversations and rumination, I am not "fixed." And I'm finally coming to terms with the fact that I - and you - will never BE "fixed." There is no perfect version of ourselves waiting beneath the layers of extra flesh or reformed habits. However, there is a better, stronger version of ourselves. The one without the mask. The one that doesn't have to hide behind food...or shopping...or drinking...or smoking...or whatever your particular vice may be. And that is the person that I'm striving to be.

What to Do When You’ve Got NOTHING To Wear!

nothing to wearnothing to wearPerhaps nothing fits just right. Or maybe you're just bored with your usual favorites. No matter the reason, in this particular moment, you have absolutely nothing to wear. What's a girl to do??? Well, first, let me tell you what NOT to do. Do NOT...I repeat, do NOT, go shopping! Just don't do it. You already have a closet full of clothes. By purchasing more, you're simply trying to scratch some psychological itch. I promise you, you DO have something to fact, you have plenty to wear. Here are a few tips to help you get your stylin' mojo back in gear. Look for inspiration! Flip through a few magazines or catalogs to get some ideas for new ways to rework pieces you already own. Maybe spend a few hours watching Bravo or E! to gather a few style tips from their reality stars. (Say what you want about their intelligence or social value, but the Real Housewives and the Kardashian Sisters know how to dress.) Maybe even take a trip to the local mall - but only if you can resist the temptation to BUY something! - to check out how the mannequins are styled and get a sense of what is trending at some of your favorite shops! Wear that thing you never, ever wear! If you absolutely must "go shopping," go shopping in your own closet. Unearth that buried treasure that has never seen the light of day. You know, those shoes that were oh so cute or that sweater that you just *had* to have...yet, you've never wore them once outside of the house? Now is as good a time as any to take them out for a spin! (Assuming, of course, that they're season and style appropriate.) Go spent your money on it. Wear it, for pity's sake! Revisit Your Style Resolutions! Was there been something you pledged to do style-wise at the beginning of the year that you still haven't gotten around to doing? Now is as good a time as any to dust off those style resolutions and bring them back to life! I mean, we all make style resolutions, don't we? *long slow blink* Those are just a few of the things that I do when I find myself with "nothing" to wear...and anyone who has seen my closet will tell you that's a big ol' lie! What about you? How do you get out of a rut when you find yourself with nothing to wear? Dish in the comments section!

Monday Morning Memo – Stay True to Yourself

monday morning memo"One of the lessons that I grew up with was to always stay true to yourself and never let what somebody else says distract you from your goals. And so when I hear about negative and false attacks, I really don't invest any energy in them, because I know who I am." - Michelle Obama

All Wrapped Up in Love: Curvy Girlz Lingerie

On February 1, I partnered with Curvy Girlz Lingerie to bring its fabulous apparel to Washington, DC! Attorney Precious Williams, founded her company after being unable to find her ideal intimate attire for her first encounter with a new love. Two years later, Precious has become an award-winning entrepreneur who helps plus-size women feel sexy and beautiful! With some smooth r&b in the background, vanilla vodka cocktails, and chocolate-covered strawberries, each lady shared what made her feel romantic and sexy. It was an awesome event. Check out the slideshow below! (It might take a moment to load.) Be on the lookout for a repeat later this year! Celebrating Valentine’s Day as a Singleton

bridgetjonesicecreamFor many folks who find themselves without a romantic partner, Valentine's Day can be a real dud. While everyone else is dashing off to candle light dinners (or to pick up some dumb little thing from CVS), you are left to celebrate on your lonesome. It can be very tempting to melt into a puddle of self-pity a la Bridget Jones. [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Source: TheOtherJuliette.Blogspot.Com[/caption] HOWEVER, last year, I took a break from my usual strategy of burying myself in a pint of Ben & Jerry's while letting some sappy rom-com flash across the screen. Instead, I declared Valentine's Day my own personal Treat Yo Self Day....

Now, for the second year in a row, I will be treating myself to a massage and chocolates, to be followed up with a viewing of The Best Man Holiday, which I pre-ordered for the occasion. Unlike the numbing out that would usually accompany these types of activities, these will actually be enjoyable because they are planned, purposeful, and just for ME! I found that by having my own special treat planned for myself, I was much less grumpy and even willing to spread a little love myself to my co-workers and neighbors on Valentine's Day. So, what about you single ladies out there? How will YOU be celebrating Valentine's Day?

Monday Morning Memo – You Become What You Believe

monday morning memomonday morning memo"You don’t become what you want, you become what you believe." - Oprah Winfrey Recently someone pointed out to me that, despite my yearnings ... to lose weight, to find "my man," etc., I operate as if there is a universal law that states that I shall not lose weight nor meet my man nor achieve any of the other things I want out of life. That statement hit me like a kick in the gut because it's totally true. I might want one thing, but my beliefs...and, subsequently, my behaviors say something else entirely. Have you checked on your beliefs lately? Do they align with what you say that you want?

Monday Morning Memo – Eat the Cookie, Wear the Swimsuit

monday morning memo"At the end of our lives, when we pass over into heaven, we're going to look around and go 'I should've had that cookie...I should've gone swimming and worn the bathing suit!'" - Emme This weekend, I spent some time watching videos on the Huffington Post OWN page. In particular, I watched two videos about weight and body image that represented widely different perspectives. The first video featured Jill Strasburg, who had gastric bypass in order to earn her father's approval. In case you didn't watch the clip, here is the summary: After the surgery, she said that her relationship (with her father and even with other people) improved because of her renewed confidence. She also got married...and then learned that she's unable to have children. She discussed being unable to eat and living with constant nausea and frequent stomach pain. Her conclusion? "I would do it again tomorrow." *long slow blink* The second video featured supermodel Emme discussing body image, photoshop, and so on. In this second video (you have to scroll down on the page to see it), Emme offers the quote that inspired today's Monday Morning Memo. Basically, she opines that if you deny yourself opportunities because of your weight, you will look back one day and realize that you missed out on life. Now, let me state (yet again) that I'm not endorsing unhealthy living. Here at Curvy CEO, we adhere to a Healthy at Every Size philosophy. I also don't make it a practice (at least online ;)) to judge other people's life choices. But, I have to say that I'm rather disturbed by Ms. Strasburg's conclusion that she would rather be thin than live without constant nausea and pain (and infertility, although it's not clear that that was caused by her surgery). As for her relationship with her father, well, I can't even begin to go there. The fact is that his feelings are not unique...he was just bold enough to admit it on the Oprah Winfrey show. But all in all, her experience has me thinking - do I just not want this bad enough OR is she just cray cray? Hmmmm. Either way, I am much more inclined to agree with Emme's assessment of things. Life is short. Eat the cookie. Go on the hike. Wear the swimsuit. Fat or slim, live your life to the fullest everyday.
