“Woman, Is Curvy CEO Still Alive?!?!”

do-less-with-more-focus "Woman, is Curvy CEO still alive?!?!" This was the opening line of an email I recently received from a friend in the blogosphere. And the answer is yes...and no. Despite the fact that I haven't posted for...well, too many months, Curvy CEO - the woman - is still very much alive. As I shared previously, my family experienced the loss of my grandmother earlier this year. Even though I've lost other relatives, my Grandma was the closest person to me to ever have passed away. And I was not prepared - at all - for how difficult it has been to accept this "new normal." So, in my time of grieving, I've been stepping back and generally doing a lot of reflecting. I have really been evaluating the people, places, and things in my life...and particularly how and with whom I spend my time. To quote Miss Jill Scott, I've been "checking to see where my head has been" and even "lettin' some old ideas go" In thinking about Curvy CEO, in particular, I realized that I was allowing myself to become the President and CEO of #TeamTooMuch. With everything going on, I had to decide what was most important to me personally. And, increasingly, shopping, makeup, and fashion just wasn't making it to the top of the list...nor was searching for just the "right" stock photos, editing clothing boards on Polyvore and ShopStyle, and staying up until the wee hours of the night editing articles that only a handful of individuals would ever read. So, I've decided to call it quits. I'm sacrificing Curvy CEO - the business, the blog - in order to take better care of Curvy CEO, the woman. I will still maintain a social media presence and maybe write a guest blog or host an event here or there. But, for now, my days as a blogger have come to an end. Perhaps I will pick this back up when inspiration finds me once again. Thank you for being here for my journey. Love and blessings to you all!

Shake Yo’ Thang: An Interview with Curvy Rhythms by Tekora

curvyrhythms1So, if you are a member of my meetup group (and I know you all are!), you know that one of the weekly activities is "Curvy Rhythms by Tekora" - a dance-based fitness class designed expressly for women plus-size women! Recently, I had the chance to interview Ms. Tekora herself to get the low-down on her Curvy Rhythms class and how you can get the most out of moving your body!

tekoraWhat is "Curvy Rhythms by Tekora"? Curvy Rhythms by Tekora is a group fitness class known as a 60-minute groove session. The class creates a dynamic and exciting space to exercise based on the principle that fitness can be fun. The routines feature aerobic/fitness interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body. You will discover the workout is great for both the body and the mind. People of all shapes, fitness levels, backgrounds, and ages come together to move to the rhythm of a variety of music. When you enter the class, the positive energy and non-intimidating atmosphere will be the foundation for an amazing experience.

What inspired you to launch this class? I wanted to start a fun way to get people to get up and move, and what better way to do that than with good music! Movement is what our bodies were designed to do. If we don't use our muscles regularly, we run the risk of them not working as well as needed. Also I wanted to show others that fitness doesn't have to be a daunting experience. I love the fact that I am not what society views as the typical fitness instructor. When people take my class I want them to see, I am curvy and I am fitness instructor.

Does someone have to be super "fit" or coordinated to really enjoy the class? My class is designed for all fitness level. I show modified steps for those who need them. The only rule is keep moving. Your heart doesn't know if you are doing the salsa or old school running man. The important thing is to keep your heart rate going.

curvyrhythms1What tips would you offer to someone who is thinking about trying Zumba or any other fitness class? Go into the class with an open mind. Don't look at others in the class and compare what they are doing to what you are doing. Everyone is on their own personal fitness journey. There's no perfect step.

If you currently have a health concern, that results in you seeing a doctor regularly, let her/him know you are starting a fitness regimen.

Where can my readers keep in touch with you via social media? I'm on Instragram at @curvyrhythmsbyTekora as well as Facebook.

Well, there you have it! This summer, Tekora is teaching classes most Saturdays at the Robert J. Pietro Community Center in Laural, MD. Click here to get more details and sign up for the class. Hope to see you there!!!

Monday Morning Memo – How Did It Get to be Late So Soon?

Well, here we are in mid-June. This is a GREAT time to check-in with yourself to see where you are with the goals you set at the beginning of 2016. Even though I'm not as far along as I'd like to be, I can unequivocally say that I have taken concrete steps towards accomplishing my goals and actually have something to show for the first six months of the year. How about you? If you find that those goals have long been forgotten, perhaps you can take time this week to revisit and re-evaluate them.

Have a great week, ladies!

Monday Morning Memo – How Are You Loving You?

    matthew 22-39

Today's Monday Morning Memo is one for the saints.

Lately I've been thinking a lot about the concept of self-love and self-care...mostly because I haven't been engaging in much of it. Oh, I've gone to the salon to get manicures and massages, but I'm talking about the care of the inner self. Part of my resistance to really taking care of myself relates to the fact that so often self-care is demonized as being selfish. But, as the Lord said Himself, you have to love your neighbor as yourself. I don't know about you, but in my case that means that I have a lot of *neglected* neighbors. So, I'm realizing that for me, I have to get back to basics. Like, turning the tv and my phone OFF. Sitting with my thoughts and thinking about what I really want out of life. Doing some journaling. Also, as I shared on Instagram, I've started a new devotional in hopes of getting my "breakthrough" as I continue to struggle with grief from the recent loss of my grandmother.

Because I was made for more than feeling broken. #devotional #grief #healthychoices

So, here is to loving yourself just as much as you love those around you.

How are you taking time to care for yourself these days? Please share in the comments section or on Facebook or Twitter. Have a great week!

"I ain't sayin' that I'm the best, but I'm the best!" - Mary J. Blige, "The One"

Ok, ladies. Time for a self-esteem check. Do you find yourself dimming your star for fear of outshining others? So often we feel like it's prideful to acknowledge our greatness. But remember, it takes nothing away from someone else simply to shine at your brightest.

    Have a SPARKLING day, ladies!
