Event Recap – 2016 Curvy Lingerie Shopping Soiree

EVENT RECAPEVENT RECAPOn Saturday, February 6, 2016, I hosted my third plus-size lingerie shopping party - the Curvy Lingerie Shopping Soiree! This year I decided to kick things up a notch by moving to a bigger event space and bringing on board a host of fabulous sponsors - including online retailer HipsandCurves; DC lingerie shop Le Bustiere, which specializes in "hard to fit" bra sizes; Lisa Fleet, who specializes in boudoir photography; hand-crafted baubles by Roni's Jewels; Mary Kay; and Pure Romance consultants Yes Kirkman and Candace Malone. Meanwhile bra fit and celebrity stylist Karima Renee was also on hand to explain what we should look for when shopping for the perfect bra!

The evening kicked off with our Curvy Love Relationship Panel, which featured Brandon Scott, also known as The Faithful Matchmaker, who uses a faith-based approach to help singles find love; relationship expert Dena Reid, Esq. who, as the dynamic force behind the highly popular blog Code Red Flag has now added author to her list of titles with her best-selling book, Flag on the Play: A Woman's Guide to Finding Mr. Right in a World of Mr. Right Nows; lawyer-turned-dating-coach Rita Goodroe, who served as a featured panelist during the national Great Love Debate Tour stop in DC; and husband-and-wife hosts of the "SomethinInCommon" podcast Kym Nichole and Mike.

The audience also enjoyed poetry by local artist, activist, and author Rae Monet and later a presentation by Karima Renee. Guests also enjoyed raffle prizes, a dessert bar and, of course, shopping!

I would be remiss if I didn't also thank my friends with Curvy Girlz Lingerie, Pretty Pear Bride, and Secret VII for their generous donation of raffle prizes!

5 Reasons You Can’t Miss the Curvy Lingerie Shopping Soiree!

Well, after months of hard work and planning, the Curvy Lingerie Shopping Soiree is finally here!!! I couldn't be more excited! After years of hosting intimate (i.e., small) events featuring a single retailer - my girl, Precious Williams of Curvy Girlz Lingerie - I've taken the plunge to expand to a larger event featuring multiple plus-size retailers as well as a relationship panel to help you take your sexy to the next level!

Still not sure if you want to come out for all the fun? Well, here are FIVE reasons why you can't miss this year's Curvy Lingerie Shopping Soiree!

buy lingerie online copy1. You get to touch, feel, and hold the product before you decide to buy! One of the major complaints for most plus-size shoppers is the inability to shop in person at major retailers. Unlike our slimmer sisters who have the opportunity to try on clothes and get a sense of fit, texture, color, etc., very often we are relegated to online offerings only. This is especially true for intimate apparel. However, with retailers like and Le Bustiere Boutique on hand, you will have the chance to touch, feel, and see products before plunking down your hard-earned money. (Oh and did I mention that Hips and Curves will be offering a special discount exclusively at the event?)

    2. Get your girls right. Bra fit and celebrity stylist Karima Renee will offer a full-length presentation about how to achieve your best look through the proper foundation garments. You can book an appointment with her right at the event! I don't know about you, but if she's good enough to work with Jazmine Sullivan, Chrisette Michele, Lane Bryant, and Vh1, she's good enough for me!

    3. Real talk about relationships. I don't know about you, but one thing I cannot stand is one-sided relationship advice. Every time I go to a panel or forum on dating and relating, it's either a group of women spouting off what they think men want or a group of men berating the ladies for what they're not doing. Oh and let's not forget the folks who have been married for forever and a day who have NO idea what it's like here out in these streets today. Nope. Can't do it. And I won't do it. That's why my Curvy Relationship Panel is featuring a cross-section of experts - singles, married, men, and women - to give a diverse perspective on real issues when it comes to dating, mating, and relating for plus-size ladies. Oh, and did I mention that each of the panelists is offering a special gift for all attendees?
    3. Gift bags, door prizes, and dessert! Everybody loves gifts, right? All guests will receive a gift bag featuring loads of goodies, including coupons from a few retailers who weren't able to participate in the event in person. Also, every guest will have the opportunity to win door prizes like some Curvy Girlz Lingerie, a bridal gift bag from Pretty Pear Bride magazine or Secret VII - a sexy board game for you and your boo! There will also be a complimentary dessert bar with lots of yummy sweets!

Who doesn't love lingerie? I don't know about you, but there's nothing like slipping into a silky nightgown at the end of a stressful day. And no, I don't have a significant other at the moment. But it's nice to just wrap myself up in that little piece of luxury. And, I cannot tell you how much wearing the *right* bra has enhanced my entire wardrobe. (Seriously, I look like I've lost 10 pounds due to the lift my bras gives me.) My clothes fit better and I feel more confident because I know that I've got the right garments on underneath. These are just a few of the reasons I love lingerie. Come share the love by coming out to the shopping soiree this Saturday!!!

Tickets are available at the door for $20; however, why don't you save $5 by purchasing your tickets in advance at See you there!

New Year, New View on Love

New year resolution fall in love written on yellow sheet of paper and red heart[caption id="attachment_10341" align="aligncenter" width="560"]Are you ready to find love in the New Year? Are you ready to find love in the New Year?[/caption]

Today's post is a guest column by relationship blogger Dena Reid of Code Red Flag. As Dena will be serving as a panelist at the upcoming Curvy Lingerie Shopping Soiree and Curvy Love Relationship Panel, I asked if she would be willing to offer a little advice to help my readers kick off the new year with a new attitude towards dating and relationships. Check out her advice below!

Are you ready to accept love into your life? I mean are you truly ready? Or are you allowing your views on love, relationships, and men to manifest red flags and toxic relationships into your life?

In 2015, and the years before the rhetoric towards finding love was pretty much the same: all men cheat, men ain’t #$%&, love is dead, etc., etc. If you hold any of these beliefs then don’t be surprised that you’ve entered 2016 single and lonely. Notice that I did not say happily single. Happily single women don’t hold these beliefs about men. They aren’t single because all men want are flings. They are single because they choose to be single because they have other priorities at the time and being in a relationship needs to take the back seat.

[caption id="attachment_10345" align="alignleft" width="300"]Looking for love? Keep reading these tips! Looking for love? Keep reading these tips![/caption]The women who hold these beliefs are bitter, often for good reason. But that bitterness, no matter how righteous it may seem, will not attract love, a good relationship, or a good man to you. In fact, that bitterness does the opposite; it repels love, relationships and men. So, for the new year I challenge women who hold these beliefs to change their view on love, relationships, and men. Here are some suggestions to get you started.

    1. Limit your time with bitter women. As the saying goes, "Birds of a feather flock together." You must be mindful of the energy you are inviting into your space. If your closest girlfriends are all bitter and lonely, then maybe it’s time for you to become close to some happy women. As you shift your circle from bitter to happy, you will see how your own energy changes and how what you attract and manifest becomes what your heart really desires.

Beautiful plus size woman bites red heart isolated2. Get some good guy friends Every woman needs some good guy friends if for nothing more than to be a reminder that good guys do exist. You will appreciate how these men treat their girlfriends and wives and will be reminded of what you deserve. Most of all, their example will demonstrate to you that what you desire is out there. Good men aren’t some unicorn in a fairytale land, they are everywhere. Many times women overlook them as non-romantic interests and that is ok. Not every good man is going to be your man, but he can be a good friend.

    3. Be a good woman. I’m sure you think you are a good woman, most of us do. But good to who? Are you only good to yourself, the people you care about, and the people who can do something for you? If so, you may not be as good of a women as you think you are. While you should know your worth, understand that your value will be determined by those who interact with you on every level. If most of your interactions with others only adds value to your own life, then how good are you to others? Make 2016 the year that you do good for no other reason than being good. Life will return the favor. Remember, you can’t reap good if you don’t sow good.

These three suggestions will get you started on the journey to manifest love, a good relationship, and a good man. Be intentional about changing your view on love and watch as your intentions manifest in this new year!

Event Alert: For Colored Girls–The Curvy Girls Edition

If you've ever been to an African-American-themed talent show or beauty pageant, I guarantee you've seen at least one performance of a "choreopoem" from the acclaimed play For colored girls who have considered suicide/When the rainbow is enuf. In my own lifetime, I have actually never seen a full-length production of the play from start to finish, unless you count Tyler Perry's feature film. So, you can imagine how excited I was to learn about the upcoming production of For Colored Girls featuring an entirely plus-size cast! This set of performances, which will take place from November 19-22, 2015 at the Anacostia Arts Center (1231 Good Hope Road SE, Washington DC, 20020), was the brainchild of actress and author, Cynthia L. Dorsey. Ms. Dorsey, who is also directing the show, was kind enough to spare a few moments to chat with us here at Curvy CEO about the upcoming production!

What motivated you to create a "curvy edition" of the heralded play, "For Colored Girls"? I decided to do a curvy girls edition of For Colored Girls because I wanted to a create an opportunity for the curvy and plus size Black actress to share her gift with the world without having to face type casting or not having a chance to be cast at all.

[caption id="attachment_10095" align="alignleft" width="300"]Cynthia L. Dorsey, Director of "For Colored Girls--The Curvy Girls Edition" Cynthia L. Dorsey, Director of "For Colored Girls--The Curvy Girls Edition"[/caption]How long has this been a goal of yours? I've always wanted to direct “For Colored Girls” since high school. Having been a plus size actress myself, going back forth between DC, New York, and Chicago auditioning and trying to get cast I am well aware of how difficult it is. It is also extremely discouraging when your talent is overlooked because of your size. So directing and producing “For Colored Girls--The Curvy Girls Edition” is my way of showing the world that talent, gift, and purpose should always be the focus and size is the accentuation.

[caption id="attachment_10094" align="alignright" width="300"]The cast of "For Colored Girls--The Curvy Girls Edition" The cast of "For Colored Girls--The Curvy Girls Edition"[/caption]Besides the plus-size cast, what other things distinguish this production from others we may have seen of this play? Ntozake Shange, the author of For Colored Girls, created this iconic piece to confront the daily issues women of color face from rape and abortion to heartache and abuse. It has been my goal to stay as true and authentic Shange's work as I can. So I haven't made many changes to her body of work. However, it wouldn't be called a Curvy Girls Edition without an added twist. Without giving way what we are adding to show I will say that the cast will also be confronting body image.

What is one thing you would say to anyone on the fence about attends the play? Lots of people think this play is a male bashing play and that men shouldn't come. Lots of people feel this is a play for only people of color. I want to encourage everyone, people of every race, sexuality, religious belief, and gender to come and see “For Colored Girls.” I am a strong believer that theater has the power to heal nations and bridge the racial, generational, sexual, religious, and gender divide in our society. Take the first step by coming to see SoulFLY's production of “For Colored Girls--The Curvy Girls Edition” and sharing in this journey of womanhood together.

I am soooo excited to attending the upcoming performances. Will I see you there? Snag your tickets here!
